Mrs. Newton B. ChapmanThe Geauga Library Foundation was created to inspire library programs and service by providing assistance to the Geauga County Public Library. Chartered in 1989 as a non-profit corporation in the State of Ohio, the Foundation has tax exempt status. It is governed by an executive board of trustees. One-third represents the community at large, 1/3 are from the Friends of the Libraries, and 1/3 are appointed from the GCPL Board of Trustees. All funds are guided by the trustees and are used to benefit the Geauga County Public Library.
Through the Foundation, the GCPL is able to initiate programs and services that it would otherwise be unable to provide. Activities of the Foundation including publishing and selling "Geauga County: A Pictorial History," establishing contacts with potential donors to the Foundation, undertaking activities supporting the GCPL, and choosing an annual recipient for the Chapman Award.
Norma Chapman is a founding trustee of the Geauga County Library Foundation. She has given much of her time to the business matters of the Foundation as well as generous financial support. "Geauga County: A Pictorial History," was initiated and published with funding from Mrs. Chapman. This devotion inspired the creation of the Chapman Award an annual presentation.
The Foundation bestows appreciation (The Chapman Award) on a special person. This honor is commemorated with a set of Waterford Crystal bookends to the recipient at the Foundation's annual ceremony and social event held in the fall.
