Chardon was founded in 1812 and grew to become a long row of white clapboard buildings along Main Street. The business row was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1868. The Village Square was rebuilt over the next five years in a High Victorian Italianate style, marked by arched windows, entrance-way columns, and exterior ornamentation.
