According to the Ohio State University Extension Service, the county had 73,000 acres divided among 710 farms in 1992. The average farm was 103 acres in size. Livestock generated roughly two thirds of farm income, with dairy products leading the way, followed by cattle and calves. The remaining one third was generated by a variety of crops, chiefly in a category entitled "other crops" which includes vegetables and greenhouse production. Over the 19-year period from 1973 to 1992, the number of farms in the county increased from 580 to 710 while the average size of farms decreased slightly from 114 acres to 103 acres. The county's total farm acreage went up from 66,000 to 73,000 in that time. More than 35 percent of Geauga County farm operators are 55 years of age or above. Approximately 37 percent are full-time farmers having no other occupation. Approximately 39 percent of the county's farm operators work more than 200 days per year off the farm. |
