The Berkshire Schools

The Mission of the Berkshire School Community is
to Maximize Each Student's Potential as an Individual
and as a Responsible Citizen

The Berkshire Local School District is located in picturesque Geauga County, an area that is rich in its rural atmosphere and Western Reserve traditions. The district encompasses seventy (70) square miles and includes the townships of Burton, Troy, and Claridon, and Burton Village.

There are three elementary schools and one junior-senior high school with a total enrollment of 1,305. Berkshire students also have access to many vocational programs at the Auburn Career Center.

It is the purpose of the Berkshire School System to nurture in each individual self-esteem, strength of character, development of mind and body, and respect for the worth and dignity of every human being.

  OPPORTUNITY FOR PROFESSIONAL GROWTH

Burton is the home of the Geauga Branch of Kent State University. Within driving distance are to be found Cleveland State University, Case Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Lake Erie College, Hiram College, Akron University, Lakeland College, and Youngstown University.

COMMUNITY

The school reflects a high level of civic pride and community support. There is convenient accessibility to numerous recreational facilities--many golf courses, Punderson State Park, Alpine Valley Ski Slopes, Nelson Ledges State Park, Pioneer Waterland, Lake Farm Park, and many swimming areas. It is a 45-minute drive to downtown Cleveland, and a 30-minute drive to Warren.

Community activities include maple syrup, pancake and sausage breakfasts during the month of March; Butter Churn Festival and Antique Dealer's Flea Market in June; the Great Geauga County Fair in September; Chamber of Commerce Halloween parade and party, Apple Butter Festival and Fire Department Ox Roast in October. Many activities are held at the local Historical Society's Century Village, such as Blue Grass festival, Musket Loading, and Civil War Re-enactments. There is also the Log Cabin in the center of town where visitors can see the maple syrup production first hand.

Berkshire Academic Accomplishments

The Ohio Department of Education on November 15, 1996 listed 612 public school districts in the State of Ohio. The Berkshire District was ranked one of the 26 recognized as a "Higher Performing District."

This recognition enabled the school to submit a proposal to participate in a deregulation pilot program, allowing the school to phase in new professional practices to improve education for all children of the school-community .
