Geauga County is one of 64 counties in Ohio where there is combined Juvenile Court and Probate Court jurisdiction.

The Probate Court has jurisdiction over probate of wills, supervision of the administration of estates and guardianships, issuance of marriage licenses, adoption proceedings, determination of sanity or mental competence, certain eminent domain proceedings and other civil matters.

The Juvenile Court has jurisdiction over delinquency cases, unruly child cases, juvenile traffic cases, dependence, neglect and abuse cases, adult cases (where a juvenile is involved), custody/visitation cases, paternity cases, support cases, URESA cases, and other juvenile-related cases such as writs of habeas corpus, applications for consent to marry, and complaints to obtain an abortion without notifying parent or guardian.

Juveniles may be sent to either the Frank G. Lavrich Youth Center or the Portage-Geauga County Juvenile Detention Center.
