about the Depot

The old B&O Railroad depot stands at the northeast corner of the Society's property. The original depot, built in 1874, was destroyed by fire and was replaced by the present structure in 1909 slightly north of its present location. The Depot, once the lifeblood of Middlefield, fulfilled many needs of the town and its inhabitants. Both passenger and freight trains arrived regularly, with the freight trains bringing merchandise to both merchants and residents. Cattle were shipped weekly to the Cleveland stockyards, and a telegraph operator sent or received messages for area businesses and residents.

The Middlefield Model Railroad Club continues work on a scale display of the old B & O line through this area. The club meets in the basement of the Depot on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 and the public is welcome. If you are interested in model railroading, contact Rick Roose at 440-632-0459 or Earl Warne at 440-632-5435. During the summer months the Middlefield Model Railroad Club will be open on Saturday afternoons along with the Depot Soda Fountain. Special arrangements for school or tour groups can be made by calling either of the above numbers.

Featured in THE DEPOT is an old-fashioned 1920's soda fountain serving hand-dipped ice cream treats. Home of the "UNBANANA" BANANA SPLIT or B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Banana), THE DEPOT is open from June 1 through August 31, 2008 daily from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on "Sundaes" from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. We will be closed July 4th. Our all-volunteer staff will enjoy serving you..

The adjacent caboose is an authentic car which plied the local area as a part of the frequent B&O trains which passed through Middlefield. The caboose was donated to us by the Geauga Historical Society in Burton, Ohio.
