Visit the Punderson State Park Web Site Punderson State Park and Punderson Lake trace their roots to Lemuel Punderson, who was Newbury's first permanent settler in 1808. He built a dam on the south side of the "big pond," which was used as the power source for his grist mill. The family built a small estate on the edge of the lake, and it became a popular gathering place in the community.
Construction on what is now known as The Manor House began in 1929 and was completed in 1948. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources - Division of Wildlife bought the land and lake for hunting and fishing in 1948, and, in 1951, it was transferred to the Division of Parks and Recreation. The manor house opened to the public on November 15, 1956. A major renovation was completed in 1982.Punderson Lake is a glacial kettle lake formed during the last Ice Age. The lake is the home of thick beds of water weeds, loosestrife, spatterdock, and waterflies....plants that add charm to the lake. It is also home to the northern water snake, and painted, snapping, and musk turtles. Great Blue Herons, muskrat, and beaver are permanent residents of the area.
