391-3914The Date Rape Drug - Rohypnol
Rohypnol, also commonly known as roofies, ruffies, or rophies, are round white tablets commonly abused by slipping the tablet into an unsuspecting person's food or drink. When dissolved, the drug is tasteless, odorless, and colorless.
Rohypnol is 10 times more powerful than Valium and causes extreme relaxation in its victim. After ingested, the effects can be felt in 20 to 30 minutes and can last for up to eight hours. Victims become dizzy and disoriented, and have trouble moving their arms and legs. Victims often appear drunk, and later have no memory of any events that transpire. If combined with other drugs such as alcohol, depressants, or other narcotics the effect can be fatal. Rohypnol has become known as the date rape drug. The abuse of the drug in connection with sexual assaults has become such a problem that Congress approved a bill in October of 1997 that imposes harsh criminal penalties for using any drugs to commit sexual assault or other violent acts. A Schedule #1 drug, possession of rohypnol carries a prison term of up to three years in jail, while distribution of the drug results in a five-year jail sentence. Those found guilty of distributing a gram of the drug can receive up to 20 years in prison. These new penalties are comparable to criminal penalties for possession of cocaine, heroin or LSD.
The drug company that makes rohypnol has set up several toll-tree numbers to provide information. The number is 888-297-5830. The following precautions should be taken:
- Do not take drinks, alcohol or other beverages from someone you do not know
- Watch the bartender make your drinks, and do not leave your drink unattended
- Do not consume anything that may have been tampered with, or party punch made in larger batches
- Watch for friends who, given the amount of alcohol consumed, appear to be more drunk then they should
