Demographics and History

   According to the 1990 Census, there were 1,093 households in Auburn and a population of 3,298 people with a 1989 median income of $45,625 per household. The township covers 29.9 miles, and its students attend the Kenston School District.

   The first house in Auburn belonged to Bildad Bradley who came from Massachusetts to Newbury in the early 1800's. He started to build a home there in 1814 and decided he had built it in the wrong place, so he just moved it to Auburn.

   The first school in Auburn was taught by Mrs. Betsey (Orton) Wilcox in the summer of 1816. The first school house was built the following year.

Open Burning Regulations

All types of open burning (except for small cooking fires) require permission from the Fire Department. When permission is granted, the fire must be in a clear area, well away from trees, tall grasses, or anything else that could catch fire, and must be attended at all times until it is completely out.

Cooking fires must be no larger that two feet by two feet, contained in a stone, brick, or block enclosure, or a barrel or pit, and at least 50 feet from a dwelling.

Copies of the open burning regulation are available at the Administration Building Monday - Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
