Demographics and HistoryBainbridge township reported a total of 3,296 households in the 1990 census and a total population of 9,694 with a 1989 median income of $57,916 per household. The township has a total of 25 square miles, and its students attend the Kenston School district.
Bainbridge has been a town of many names. At one time it was called Austintown after large landowner, David Austin. It was also called Kent's Town after Gamaliel Kent. Eventually it became Bainbridge in honor of Commodore William Bainbridge. The school district, Kenston, is the last-remaining reminder of Gamaliel Kent.
In March of 1817, the Geauga County Commissioners met in Chardon and organized the town of Bainbridge. At that time the township included Auburn, which became a separate township at a later date. Some historians believe that the separation occurred that summer. The first Congregational church was organized in 1819 by John Leslie.
On Thanksgiving Day 1811, the McConoughey family became the first settlers in the township. In 1820 the first saw mill was built by General Chauncey Eggleston who followed it the next year with the first grist mill. The first blacksmith, Thomas Marshall, opened his business in 1822.View a township map
