Demographics and History

There were 909 Burton Township households reported in the 1990 census, and a population of 2,838, earning a 1989 median income of $30,898. The 24.4 square miles comprising Burton Township and Village is joined with Claridon and Troy Townships to form the Berkshire School District .

Most historians have claimed that Burton was named after early settler Burton Street, son of landowner, Titus Street. However, Burton historian B.J. Shanower disagreed and thought it was named after Burton-on-Trent, England.

Turhand Kirtland and David Beard arrived in Burton in June of 1798. The first home was their tent, pitched on Saturday, June 16. They were joined by Levi Tomlinson, Jason Rice and Thomas Umberville*, who was credited with bringing the first family to Burton . The original house was somewhere in the vicinity of Belle's Colonial Restaurant. Some say it was on that site, others argue that it was located farther to the west.

Wherever it was, Umberville's daughter, Stella, moved it. She married Eleazer Hickox who built the house that is currently Century Village Museum. Umberfield was blind and very ill when his wife died. Stella tried to get him to move in with her, but he steadfastly refused to leave his home. Resourceful Stella finally came up with the answer and in 1849, they moved his log cabin and attached it to the back of the Hickox Brick, where it can be toured today during a visit to Century Village.

*Some historical publications refer to him as Umberville; others as Umberfield.
