Demographics and History

Burton Village, in the 1990 Census, reported 519 households with a population of 1,349, earning a median income of $30,898. A complaint of many homeowners in the Village is that 42% of the households are rental properties. There are 24.4 square miles in the township and the village combined. Berkshire High School and Burton Elementary School are both located within the village limits.

The Village was incorporated in 1895, and George H. Ford elected mayor. The council members and the mayor laid down several rules, not unlike the present day ordinance prohibiting smoking in public by children under 18 years of age.

There were rules against intoxication, against minors playing pool, driving over eight miles per hour, pitching quoits on Main Street, and playing ball in the street.

In November of 1896, Earl Bliss secured a contract to build the first electric light plant. It was located in the building that later came to house Geauga Tractor. The building was vacated after the death of James Bahnick in the early 1900's.

In 1897, Geauga County Fairgrounds in Burton was the scene of a huge Republican convention with an attendance between 7,000 and 10,000 people. On September 15, the visitors arrived at Burton Station, and were taken to the fairgrounds by 75 hacks and wagons. Farmers brought in food to feed the multitudes. Two special trains from Warren and Youngstown, and four private Lake Erie coaches, as well as the C & E Electric brought people in from Cleveland.
