The 1990 census reports a population of 4,037 with 1,403 households located in the township. The median household income as reported in 1989 was $45,189.
The town was named after a Bostonian, Peter Chardon Brooks, and was established as county seat in 1808. The first building was a double log house owned by Norman Canfield, who used it as his home and a hotel. It was torn down in 1818 and another was built in its place by Canfield. In July 1814 the first dance was held in the court-room, located above the jail. The hall was also used as a church. Residents built a mill, also around 1814, because the closest mills were in Newbury and Painesville, and at that time it took two days to get to either place.
A story is told in the 1880 Pioneer History book about one of the early settlers. It is said that he was sour and crusty, and had been known to be mealy-mouthed. Thus, people called him Johnny Cake. His half sister was called "Mush." They were related to the Hoe Cake and Griddle Cake families. Fact or fiction, it's a cute story.
