Demographics and History

   The township's population in 1990 was 2,656 with a total of 898 households counted. The 1989 median income was $34,833 per household. The township, which was originally called Burlington, is 22.8 square miles.

   In 1808, a saw and grist mill was put up by Stephen Higby. The first physician was a Dr. Jewett from Boston who had an office in East Claridon around 1832. His practice was not successful, and he left the area. Next to come were Drs. Alden, McAlpin, and E.C. Taylor.

   Mory's Brothers opened the first shop in East Claridon around 1832, while Z.P. Brinsmade was the first resident merchant.

   Could it be that Weight Watchers started in 1870 in Claridon? There was a group called The Claridon Weighing Association, but apparently its purpose was to weigh stock, not people. It was an Association with a good reputation because people came as far away as Burton and Munson for the annual and semi-annual weighings.

Claridon has a contract with each of the two fire departments, the south portion being served by Burton and the north by Chardon.


Recycling

Free service for Claridon residents only. Accepting glass bottles and jars--clear, brown, and green; #1 and #2 plastic containers; aluminum cans and foil; steel and tin food cans; and newspapers. Please clean materials, remove and discard lids, and keep paper separate and dry.
