FAX: 286-1693Demographics and History The township's population enumerated in 1990 was 3,311 with a total of 1,166 households. The residents earned a median income in 1989 of $35,904 per household. The township measures 22.2 square miles.
Hambden was originally known as Bondstown, so named for Dr. Solomon Bond who purchased a very large portion of land in 1801. When it separated from Painesville, it became Hambden, adding the "b" to distinguish it from Hamden, Ohio. Dr. Bond settled at Sissons Corners. By 1802-1803, another 8-9 families had moved in and settled in the township.
Bears, wolves, elk, deer, rattlesnakes, and other wild creatures were plentiful at the time. Leonard Pomeroy, was the first person bitten by a rattlesnake. The unfortunate incident happened while he was mowing, and fortunately he recovered after a month. The early settlers shared the area with 20-30 Indians who lived in the southern part of the township.
The first school was started in 1809. Anna Pomeroy taught the 13 students.
Bondstown Logging Society, a co-operative, was begun in 1810. Members had their own rules and regulations, and fines were paid with whiskey.
