The first settlement, in March 1799, was made by Isaac Thompson who came to Ohio from Washington County, Pa. It was hard for those early settlers to raise crops because wild animals would destroy their fields. One of the early settlers, George Wallace, found several runaway slaves one fall. Wallace threatened to turn them in to their owners and one escapee who had an old musket shot Wallace. The slaves ran, and eventually their owners caught them in Burton. Wallace recovered from his wound.
Buildings often served several purposes. Miss Lucinda Walden taught the first school in 1812. The building in which she taught doubled as a corn crib in the fall and winter, and as the school house during the summer. Isaac Thompson built a distillery around 1811 which was also used in the fall and winter for drying flax. The sharing lasted only a short time since when the flax dried, it started to burn. Flax, distillery and building all went up in smoke.
