Demographics and History

Middlefield Village population in 1990 was 1,898, with a total of 770 households. The 1989 median income of its residents was $25,854 per household.

The first settlement, in March 1799, was made by Isaac Thompson who came to Ohio from Washington County, Pa. It was hard for those early settlers to raise crops because wild animals would destroy their fields. Until 1841, Middlefield was called Batavia.

In 1818 James Thompson built a hotel near Thompson's Corners. At the time it was the largest hotel between Warren and Painesville. Township elections, company training sessions, business meetings, and other important events were held there. Thompson was considered to be the best hunter in the area, and his hunting profits paid for his first farm.

Joseph Clark became the first resident physician in 1822.

Middlefield Village became incorporated in 1901 with Joe E. Johnson as the first mayor.
