968-3784Demographics and History According to the 1990 Census, there were a total of 562 households and a population of 1,682 earning a median income in 1989 of $35,000 per household. The township covers 24.3 miles.
The first permanent settler, Rosewell Stevens, came to Montville in the summer of 1815 and built a log home. The first road was laid in 1818. Stevens later became the first postmaster when mail service was established in 1823 along the Unionville-Parkman route. Mail was delivered 2-3 times a week on foot or horseback.
Montville was under Hambden's government until 1822 when residents circulated a petition for separate political status. The Reverend Jonathan Winchester, a Congregationalist missionary, was the first preacher.
Frank Rhodes and his sons ran a cider and jelly mill on Route 6 that was in operation for 30 years from the 1870's to 1900. In addition to running the mill, they cut shingles and did sawmill work. When Frank died, his son Bennie, moved the business to Chardon.
