Demographics and History

According to the Census of 1990, there were 3,083 residents in Newbury, and 1,908 households having a median income of $37,266. The township is 25 square miles in size.

Judge Stone and Lemuel Punderson moved to Burton, but cleared land in Newbury. In 1809 Lemuel Punderson and Mr. Hickox built a grist mill, saw mill, and distillery. Lemuel moved his family to Newbury in 1810, and many settlers followed.

By 1828 there were four hotels in Newbury. The Torrey Hotel was at the intersection of Butternut and Route 44. The Old Newbury Tavern was south of the Torrey Hotel. The third, which was owned by Uri Hickox, stands today as a private home and is to be found at the corner of Routes 44 and 87. The fourth, in South Newbury, also is a private residence today.

In 1884, South Newbury had a store, two groceries, a shoe shop, two blacksmith shops, a cheese factory, a hotel, post office, and church. The town also boasted Good Templar Lodge, Sons of Temperance, a whiskey saloon, a billiard saloon, and an occasional WCTU meeting.

Bell Street used to be called Christian or Pious Street because of all the religious people who lived there. Music Street was so named due to the number of musically gifted people who built their homes there. Pekin Road and Dublin (North Woodland) acquired their names because several Irish families lived on those roads. North Woodland was also known as Coon Street at one time, and there was a Grasshopper Hill in the Township.

Aluminum Cans for Burned Children

The Fire Department is collecting cans for burned children. The proceeds go to Camp Phoenix which is held once a year in the summer for children of burn injuries. The money raised from the cans also goes for prizes, tee shirts and other fun items for the kids.

Drop off cans behind the fire station, and put all cans in tied plastic bags. If anything else is used, the cans will not be picked up. Only aluminum cans can be accepted.

Volunteers Welcome

There are many activities and ways in which you can help the department. If you are interested, please call the station at 564-2261 and leave your name and number. Or stop by on Tuesday evenings.
