P.O. Box 688
Parkman, OH 44080
548-2904Demographics and History According to the 1990 Census, the township has 5,614 residents and 772 households. The median per household income in 1989 was $28,135. Parkman is 37 miles southeast of Cleveland, 20 miles northwest of Warren, and 30 miles northeast of Akron. The township measures 19.1 square miles in area.
The township got its name from Samuel Parkman who first came here from Boston in 1797, returning in 1803. In 1804, he designated 600 acres as the Village of Parkman. It was the first township to be formed in the southern end of the county.
The first log building, which served as both church and school, was built in 1807. A Masonic order called Western Phoenix was established in 1817 and disbanded in 1825. It was reorganized in 1857. The first Amish settler in Parkman arrived in 1886.
Early Parkman consisted of three settlements. "Little Ireland" was so called because of the large number of Irish residents. "Bundysburg" was named after Moses Bundy who came here from South Hampton, Mass., in 1816. "Smithville" was named after Seth Smith who came here in 1819 from New York.
The Buckeye Band was organized here in 1886, and a grandstand was built for them in the Village in 1887. In 1998, all that remained was the roof portion which was moved to the Century Village Museum grounds in Burton.
The business section of Parkman burned in 1899. The cause of the fire was never determined. The original town hall burned to the ground on May 7, 1945 at 4:30 a.m.
In 1904 Parkman celebrated its 100th anniversary before a crowd of 3,000 people. The day began with a 21-gun salute.
