Demographics and History

The 2000 census put Troy's population at 2,567 persons — a gain of 664 since 1999, and a total of 871 households (an increase of 249 over the previous 10-year period) earning a median income in 1999 of $51,128. The township covers 25.7 square miles.

In 1820, Jacob Welsh, from Boston, Massachusetts, offered township officials 50 acres to build a church, parsonage and cemetery. He also offered to give glass and nails for building the church. In gratitude for his offer, the town fathers agreed to name the township Welshfield. However, Welsh "welshed" on the deal, and, in 1834, the voters changed the name to Troy.

In those early years, getting to Burton meant fording, swimming, or canoeing across the Cuyahoga River. The men of Troy decided to build a bridge. When the men of Burton heard of it, they agreed to help. They all came together one day for a bridge-building picnic. The men on the Troy side built the Troy side of the bridge, and the men on the Burton side did likewise on their side of the stream. Then came the middle portion, the heaviest part of the bridge. Things didn't quite go according to plan as the whole structure, and the men with it, went down into the river. To the dismay of the women and children watching from the shore, the first thing to rise to the top, were the men's hats. However, all the men soon followed, and the project was given up for another day.

Frogs played a large part in Troy's history. It was wartime, and all the men were called for battle except two. In the spring of 1814, the frogs came out of hibernation and began croaking. The women and children had never heard the sounds of frogs before, and thought for sure that the area Indians were signaling each other to begin a massacre of the residents. One of the men set out on a brave, single-handed mission to discover the truth, which he found in a pond in the woods.

For Your Information

Township Roads

Because of concerns for safety, traffic flow, and economy, trustees began a program of road improvement funded by the road levy. To pave or chipseal a section of road without proper preparation, costs a lot of money in repairs. Proper preparation includes having the ditches far enough from the center line to provide adequate shoulders to hold the pavement in place and for pedestrians to escape traffic, and deep enough to drain any spring or seep that may be under the pavement.

The sub-base must be stable or the pavement will crack in a short time. The pavement must be wide enough for a school bus to pass a milk truck safely, and deep enough to have the strength to handle legal loads. The surface should be sealed to prevent the infiltration of moisture.
